KeyNesta vs Microsoft Authenticator
Current as of 2 October 2026. Microsoft rows checked against Microsoft's own documentation.
Microsoft Authenticator is free, it is on iOS and Android, and for Microsoft work or school accounts it does things no third-party app can, including push approvals and passwordless sign-in. If that is the bulk of your 2FA, it is a sensible default. The problems start when the rest of your life ends up in it too.

Where Microsoft Authenticator is the better choice
If your working life is Entra ID, Microsoft 365 and conditional access, keep it. Push approvals, number matching and passwordless sign-in for Microsoft accounts are not things a standards-based TOTP app can replicate, and fighting that is a waste of your afternoon. Plenty of people are well served by Microsoft Authenticator for Microsoft, and something else for everything else. Both apps are free.
Where KeyNesta is the better choice
Two concrete limits are worth knowing before you rely on it for your personal accounts. The first is in Microsoft's own documentation: backup and restore must be on the same device type, so an iPhone backup will not restore on Android. Switch platform and you re-enrol by hand. The second is that there is no export of your TOTP accounts at all — the backup is a route back into the same app, not a file you own.
KeyNesta answers both directly: an encrypted backup file you keep wherever you keep important files, optional zero-knowledge sync where the server stores ciphertext it cannot decrypt, and a plain standard export whenever you want one, including on the way out. The web app runs in any browser, so which phone platform you are on stops being the question. Codes are generated on the device from the secret and your clock, so they work with the network off.
Honest gaps: KeyNesta is not open source, has had no independent security audit, has no shared or team vaults, no browser extension and no desktop app, and it cannot do push approvals or passwordless sign-in for anyone. Lost phone recovery covers what is and is not recoverable, and features lists the rest.

Frequently asked questions
Can I move a Microsoft Authenticator backup from iPhone to Android?
No. Microsoft's documentation states that backup and restore must happen on the same device type, so an iOS backup cannot be restored on Android or the reverse. Changing phone platform means re-enrolling the accounts by hand.
Can I export codes out of Microsoft Authenticator?
Not your TOTP accounts. The cloud backup restores into Microsoft Authenticator on the same platform; it is not a portable file you can take to another app. Microsoft documents exporting saved passwords, which is a different thing.
Should I drop Microsoft Authenticator entirely?
Probably not. Push approvals, number matching and passwordless sign-in for Microsoft work or school accounts are things a standards-based TOTP app cannot replicate. Keeping it for Microsoft and something else for everything else is a reasonable split.
