KeyNesta vs 2FAS Auth
Current as of 2 October 2026. 2FAS rows checked against 2FAS's own product and support pages.
The 2FAS project is a well-run open-source authenticator with one of the better help centres in the category — close to a hundred articles, each titled as the question people actually type. It is free, it is on iOS and Android, and it has a browser extension for Chrome, Brave, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari. It also has groups, which most authenticators do not.

Where 2FAS is the better choice
It is open source, which KeyNesta is not. Its backup model uses storage you already own — your iCloud or your Google Drive — so there is no third party holding your encrypted tokens at all, and for a lot of people that ends the argument. It has shipping phone apps today, while KeyNesta's are built and still sitting in their store queues. Both are free.
Where KeyNesta is the better choice
The browser. The 2FAS extension is a companion that asks your phone to confirm each code; the KeyNesta web app is the product. You can add a code, import a file, build the hierarchy, make an encrypted backup and set up sync without a phone being involved at any point, which matters if you spend the day in cloud consoles and would rather not pick up a handset twelve times an afternoon. See web authenticator for how the browser vault is encrypted and when the key is discarded.
The other difference is the scale the filing is built for. 2FAS gives you groups, which is already more than most; KeyNesta gives you separate encrypted vaults, coloured spaces, groups that nest as deep as the structure actually goes, and tags that cut across all of it, with ranked search over the entry name, issuer, account name, tags and full group path.
Honest gaps: KeyNesta is not open source, has had no independent security audit, has no shared or team vaults, no browser extension and no desktop app, and its sync means trusting KeyNesta's servers to hold ciphertext rather than using cloud storage you already control. Import from Aegis and 2FAS covers the move, and features lists everything shipped and everything not.

Frequently asked questions
Does 2FAS have a web app?
It has a browser extension, and the extension works with the 2FAS mobile app rather than holding your codes itself — you click the extension, then confirm on your phone. The KeyNesta web app is the full product, so adding codes, importing, organizing, backups and sync all happen in the browser with no phone involved.
Can I import my 2FAS tokens into KeyNesta?
Yes. KeyNesta imports an unencrypted 2FAS export file and shows a preview with duplicates flagged before anything is saved. The import can be undone in one action.
Whose servers hold my codes?
With 2FAS, nobody's — backups go to your own iCloud or Google Drive, or to a file you keep. With KeyNesta sync, ours do, as ciphertext we cannot decrypt. If you would rather no third party held anything at all, 2FAS has the better answer.
