Do I need an account to use KeyNesta?

Short answer

No. Open the web app, create a vault with a passphrase, and start adding codes — no email address, no phone number, nothing to verify. An account exists for one purpose only: carrying your encrypted vault between devices through sync, which is optional.

What you get without an account

Everything that happens on one device: generating codes, vaults, spaces, groups and tags, search, imports, encrypted backup files and export. Codes are computed from the secret and your clock, both of which are local, so none of it needs a server.

What an account adds

One thing: sync. With sync on, your vault is uploaded as ciphertext the server has no key for, and another device signed in to the same account decrypts it locally with your passphrase. That is the only reason to create one.

No phone number, ever

KeyNesta never asks for a phone number. An authenticator that ties your second factor to a SIM card reintroduces exactly the attack — SIM swapping — that a TOTP app exists to avoid. If you would rather not have an account at all, use encrypted backup files to move between devices instead.

Try KeyNesta free. The web app needs no sign-up.
