How to set up 2FA on Coinbase
Checked against Coinbase's own help on 10 October 2026. Menus change, so follow the nearest label if yours differs.
Short answer
Open Coinbase's security settings (2-step verification settings, Authenticator app), choose the authenticator app option, and scan the QR code Coinbase shows with KeyNesta (or enter the setup key by hand). Type the six-digit code KeyNesta shows back into Coinbase to finish, and save the recovery material Coinbase gives you before you close the page.
Before you start
Have KeyNesta open and unlocked before Coinbase shows the QR code, so the code is ready the moment it appears. KeyNesta needs no account to do this. It stores authenticator-app codes only: it does not do passkeys or hardware security keys, and where Coinbase offers those you set them up in Coinbase directly.
Steps
- Sign in to Coinbase in a web browser and open the 2-step verification settings page.
- Under Available Methods, choose Set up next to Authenticator app.
- Follow the prompts until Coinbase shows a QR code.
- Add it to KeyNesta. Open the KeyNesta web app (or the app on your phone once it is released), unlock your vault, choose Scan QR and point the camera at the code on screen. If you cannot scan, use Import QR image, or choose Add entry to paste the setup key.
- Enter the code KeyNesta shows to finish. Coinbase says setup needs the authenticator on your phone or device, so have it unlocked.
- Keep at least one other 2-step verification method on the account.

Backup and recovery for Coinbase
Coinbase's help stresses keeping backup methods, so you can still get in if you lose one. It does not describe a downloadable list of codes in the pages we read.
Save whatever Coinbase gives you somewhere that is not the phone holding your codes. Where to store your 2FA backup codes compares the options, and 2FA backup and sync covers backing up the KeyNesta vault itself.
Things to know about Coinbase
- Coinbase says it supports all authenticator apps, including Duo, Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, and that it no longer supports Authy.
- Coinbase Exchange and older Pro accounts have separate help pages with slightly different menus.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use KeyNesta as the authenticator app for Coinbase?
Yes. Coinbase asks for a standard time-based code, and KeyNesta reads the same QR code or setup key and generates that code on your device, offline. Coinbase does not learn which app you chose. KeyNesta holds authenticator-app codes only; it has no passkey or hardware security key support. How to add the code is in How do I add a 2FA code to KeyNesta?
What happens to my Coinbase 2FA if I lose my phone?
Coinbase's help says it cannot remove 2-step verification completely if you lose your phone, so you need at least SMS as a fallback; a security key or authenticator app is recommended in addition. If your KeyNesta vault is synced or you made an encrypted backup, you can restore the codes on another device; the lost phone guide covers the order to do things in.
How do I add Coinbase to KeyNesta if I cannot scan the QR code?
Use the manual-entry option if Coinbase offers it on the QR screen, and paste the key into KeyNesta. In KeyNesta you can also upload a screenshot with Import QR image, paste an otpauth:// link, or add the entry by hand with the secret. Delete any screenshot of the QR afterwards: it works like a password.
Can I use the same Coinbase code on two devices?
Codes come from a shared secret, so any app that holds the secret shows the same codes. The tidy way is KeyNesta's optional end-to-end encrypted sync, which carries the vault to a second device. The alternative is to add the secret to a second app while the QR code is still on screen; once Coinbase stops showing it, you cannot get it back without re-enrolling.
Can I use a security key with Coinbase as well as KeyNesta?
Coinbase calls SMS the default and least secure method and points to a security key for the strongest protection, with a passkey plus push notification as a combination that needs no key. KeyNesta supports neither; it holds the authenticator-app code.
Does Coinbase still support Authy for two-step verification?
Coinbase's help says it no longer supports Authy and suggests Google Authenticator or Duo instead. Any standard authenticator app, KeyNesta included, reads the same QR code.
Which is safer on Coinbase, SMS or an authenticator app?
Coinbase describes SMS as the default and the least secure option, and recommends moving to stronger methods, with a security key at the top. An authenticator app keeps the code off your phone number, so it is a step up from SMS but not the strongest option Coinbase offers.
