A Google Authenticator alternative that takes backup seriously

Google Authenticator is fine — until a phone is lost, stolen, or reset. Its cloud backup ties your 2FA secrets to your Google account, there is no desktop or browser version, and there is no encrypted backup file you actually own. If any of that has made you nervous, that is usually the moment people go looking for an alternative.

To be fair to Google Authenticator: it is simple, free, and works everywhere TOTP works. If a flat list on one phone with Google-account backup is enough for you, it does the job. KeyNesta is for people who want their 2FA to survive a lost phone without handing the keys to a platform account.
Zero-knowledge, in one paragraph
When you enable sync, every entry is encrypted on your device with a key derived from your vault passphrase before it is uploaded. The server stores ciphertext plus the bare minimum needed to sync — IDs, versions, timestamps. Nobody at KeyNesta can read your accounts, your notes, or your secrets. Switching takes about five minutes
- In Google Authenticator, open the menu and choose Transfer accounts → Export accounts, then select what to export. You get one or more QR codes.
- In KeyNesta, choose Import → Google Authenticator. Scan the QR with your phone, or upload a screenshot in the web app. Decoding happens entirely on your device.
- Verify a few codes match between the two apps, then remove the accounts from the old one when you are confident.
